Syfy's The Magicians

Syfy is brining the Lev Grossman's bestselling trilogy, The Magicians, to tv in 2016. The only comparison here is think of Harry Potter in University.

The pilot was fun to watch, and if your a fan of Harry Potter, The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe,  and 90210 then you have found your series.

The premise of the show is about a socially awkward grad student named Quentin Coldwater (played by Jason Ralph) who gets an invitation to attend Brakebills College for Magical Pedagogy. He and his fellow students soon discover that the magical universe they had read about in their childhood books is actually real and poses a danger to 'the real world".

The books are immensely popular with the last in the series opening up last summer at #1 in the best selling hardcover category on The New York Times Best Seller list. Clearly there is a following and I am eager to see how the story unravels. But for the time period, if your itching to get your magic on you will just have to pick up the books.

USA Networks COMPLICATIONS

Departing a little from May Screenings I wanted to focus on an amazing new show from USA Network called Complications airing June 18th.

The story is about an ER doctor names John Ellison. John has personal demons and is struggling to move past the death of his young daughter, when he intervenes in a drive by shooting saving a boy and shooting the assassins to protect the life of the young victim.

John feels a sense of renewed life as he feels he must protect those that can not protect themselves. This is a story about a hero turned vigilante. Sometimes in order to the right thing, you must do the wrong thing.

The pacing is perfect and John, played by Jason O'Mara is a believable doctor and hero. The pilot left me wanting more!

USA Network's MR ROBOT

Coming to USA Network on June 24th 2015 is a psychological thriller about the world of computer hackers. At first glance, I noticed that this pilot feels very 80's. Its dark, minimalistic but is set in present day. My first impression was that it had a feel of AMC's Halt and Catch Fire but only in mood.

Its hard to judge this show purely by its pilot. I think I liked it. I know that doesn't tell you much, but it did leave me wanting more out of pure curiosity.

Christian Slater returns to TV as he plays the leader of a hacker organization trying to recruit the very talented and socially inept programmer named Elliot. Elliot just doesn't fit in and feels the need to hack into everyones personal lives that he comes into contact with. He trusts no-one and is always alone. His job by day is to consult for one of the most powerful organizations in the world which he refers to as Evil Corp and by night he is a vigilante hacker who needs to correct those who do harm to the world. He is an idealist.

When approached by Mr. Robot to consult on a mind blowing hack that will rid the world of all debt by taking down Evil Corp, Elliot must decide which side he is on and whom can he trust.
